Headline news in the London Daily Mail on 3rd May 2021 proclaimed ‘Stunning therapy lands knock-out blow to cancer by training immune cells to seek and destroy deadly threats in trials’.  CAR T-cell therapy, it is explained, is a type of cell-based gene therapy, that involves altering the genes inside the T cells to help them attack different types of cancer, especially breast cancer.
WHIZ KID OF MODERN SCIENCE
Make no mistake, gene therapy is the whiz kid of modern science and an enormous amount of money is being and has been channelled into its research and development but one has to ask what has happened to make us question the very make-up of our genes?  This radical idea of altering or manipulating the genes to fight disease, suggests that there is a fault in the body which needs to be corrected by man-made, scientific intervention. The design of the human body is a superb concept that has taken many millions of years to evolve and we who are alive today are the survivors of countless challenges in the past. By now we should be perfect examples of strong, healthy human beings such as once existed as recently as the 1930’s when American dentist Dr.Weston Price made his famous voyage around the world visiting isolated, communities relying solely on basic, nourishing food sourced directly from the land and sea where they lived.

ADJUSTING NATURE'S BLUEPRINT
Unfortunately, in many countries especially in the West, humans represent a sick society ridden with ever growing health problems.  When disease strikes, rather than ask the fundamental question ‘where have we gone wrong?’ the first thought by modern medical scientists is how they can adjust Nature’s blueprint to suit our current needs.
Picture
Consultant Surgeon Maurice Frohn FRCS, in his talk ‘The Link between Diet and Disease ‘ strongly disagreed with this way of thinking saying ‘........there is nothing wrong with our bodies; it is the way we treat them that makes them ill.’  He was convinced that faulty food was at the heart of many of the diseases from which humans suffer, especially convenience food often laced with chemicals and artificial ingredients. You only have to look at the long list of ingredients on the back of a packet of even the simplest type of food to realize how bad the situation is. Gone are the days when people prepared their own meals at home using basic ingredients and fresh vegetables.  Now, a meal is often anything that can be bought pre-prepared in the supermarket and quickly heated up in a microwave oven. This is not the sort of food conducive to good health. Once the habit of eating convenience food has taken hold, such as food containing polyunsaturated seed oils, excess sugar and refined flour, obesity and digestive problems, especially constipation, will inevitably be the outcome. Constipation and diverticular disease, often regarded as common complaints can     have serious consequences, even putting people at risk of developing cancer and type 2 diabetes.

IMPORTANT OBSERVATIONS TRAGICALLY FORGOTTEN
J.E.R. McDonagh, FRCS, Hunterian Professor of Surgery, claimed that at least one third of all cancers are linked to what you eat.  A paper published in the Lancet (November 1981) stated “During the first two decades of this (20th)century several distinguished surgeons observed that lumpy breasts, chronic cystic disease, and possibly cancer of the breast, were frequently found in ‘chronic intestinal stasis’ (i.e. severe constipation) and that the cystic condition resolved after dietary or surgical correction of the constipation and auto-intoxication.  After the 1920’s these clinical observations appeared to have been forgotten, our findings support earlier clinical observations which suggest an association between severe constipation and breast disease.”  The paper concluded, “It is therefore likely that many chemical substances originating in the colon might enter the blood stream and reach the breast.  …… it is not unreasonable to suggest that potentially toxic substances derived from the colon have damaging or even carcinogenic effects upon the breast epithelium.”

McDonagh considered that the chief factor causing the acquired manifestation of disease was faulty food causing intestinal toxaemia.  He went on to say that if one could rid humanity of an intestinal toxaemia one would have the answer to diabetes prevention. The late Surgeon Commander Brian Cliff was particularly forceful in attempting to draw attention to constipation as being a forerunner of many other more serious diseases.  Cliff acknowledged the extreme importance of this dogma and observed that with this knowledge “anyone can avoid diabetes, even if it is in the family.  It has also important implications for people with a lowered glucose threshold and for those who already have diabetes.”  (N.B. Late-onset type 2 diabetes.)

'GOLDEN RULES
The way to avoid constipation and intestinal toxaemia is to adhere to a natural diet.  Surgeon Captain T.L. Cleave, FRCP author of the Saccharine Disease, explained that it is important not to eat anything unless you really want it. 'Sometimes we eat food for the sake of politeness or to save it from being wasted, but this is a most unnatural thing to do.' So the first golden rule is to eat only when you are hungry and Cleave warned that this decision is best made before going to the table.  The second golden rule is to avoid any food that has been greatly altered from its natural state; as such foods mostly contain refined carbohydrates, particularly white flour and sugar.  Examples would include white bread, pastry, cakes and biscuits, all of which should be avoided or reduced to a minimum, as well as sugar (white or brown) jams, confectionery and sweet drinks such as fruit drinks and colas.  He recommended that white bread and flour should be replaced with 100% wholemeal and that raw or dried fruit should be eaten instead of sugar.

NEW THERAPIES AT A PRICE
Gene therapy may offer miraculous treatments and ‘cures’ but it should be remembered that they often come at a price, much like the gene therapy vaccines now being promoted worldwide. These therapies are new discoveries and the long term effects are not known. Indeed the treatments themselves sometimes have severe and unexpected outcomes that send one’s own natural immune system into overdrive with alarming results.
